About this book
The interest in climbing and walking robots (CLAWAR) has remarkably augmented over recent years. Novel solutions for complex and very diverse application fields (exploration/intervention in severe environments, personal services, emergency rescue operations, transportation, entertainment, medical, etc.), has been anticipated by means of a large progress in this area of robotics. Moreover, the amalgamation of original ideas and related innovations, the search for new potential applications and the use of state of the art supporting technologies permit to foresee an important step forward and a significant socio-economic impact of advanced robot technology in the forthcoming years. In response to the technical challenges in the development of these sophisticated machines, a significant research and development effort has to be undertaken. It concerns embedded technologies (for power sources, actuators, sensors, information systems), new design methods, adapted control techniques for highly redundant systems, as well as operational and decisional autonomy and human/robot co-existence. This book contains the proceedings of the 7th Climbing and Walking Robots 2004 (CLAWAR 2004) Conference offering the international scientific community one of the most excellent forums for academics, researchers and industrialists interested in this motivating area of climbing and walking robots. It provides a wide forum of original state-of-the-art contributions from various industrial and new/emerging research fields, presenting a full picture of climbing and walking robots. The conference, held in Madrid, Spain, September 22-24 2004 was organized by the Thematic Network "CLAWAR 2" and funded by the European Commission under the GROWTH Programme.

This is the most amazing thing ever…

A couple of years ago I bought my sister the first generation of the Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner for about $250.00. Several weeks ago I ran across the O’Cedar O’Duster at Wal-Mart for about $40.00 and made an impulse purchase. I was so impressed that I got my mom the O’Duster for Christmas. My review will not only comment on my experience with the O’Cedar product but also compare the O’Duster to the Mint. Both of these products are hard floor sweepers (note I said “sweeper”. There is no sucking action on either of them.). They use a disposable cloth product to sweep wood, tile, vinyl, etc. They will not work on carpets/rugs; nor, are they designed to wet-clean the floor. These do not take the place of mopping.First, a description of the O’Cedar O’Duster…There is a round plastic center housing that is about eight inches in diameter and a little over two inches tall. It is surrounded... 5/5 M. Nance - See all my reviews, December 30, 2013

Great tool for those who are not expecting this to replace a human.

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:31 MinsI vacuum regularly but because I have pets, I need to Swiffer every couple of days or else a layer of fur builds up on my hardwood floors. I decided to give this a try and it works well for me. The long cycle lasted 2.5 hours when I tested it. It's not a Roomba, so don't expect a vacuum cleaner. It's not the Mint, so don't expect anything advanced or smart from it. It's simply a moving Swiffer-type cleaner that grabs small items like dust and pet/human hair. Don't expect it to pick up anything bigger and your expectations will be realistic. This does not replace a vacuum cleaner or actual sweeping by a thinking and seeing person, but it's good to leave on to do its stuff in between cleanings to get some pet hair off the floor without effort. It will get stuck in some areas like elevated edges, rugs, wires, and tight corners, so it probably won't be that effective left on when leaving the home. A great tool for those who are not expecting this to turn this... 4/5 BrooklynNY (NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: O-Cedar O-Duster Robotic Floor Cleaner (Health and Beauty), June 28, 2014

"Help me, I'm stuck and can't get out" is what the O-Duster would say if it could talk.

0 1/5 GabisGumby (Missouri) - See all my reviews This review is from: O-Cedar O-Duster Robotic Floor Cleaner (Health and Beauty) I really wanted to love this little thing. We just got hardwood floors and thought this would be perfect for "in between" cleanings. No such luck. It's constantly getting stuck on everything, then it turns itself off because it can't get out, so far it's gotten stuck on the edge of a rug, one wall that doesn't have a baseboard yet, a cable on the floor, under a recliner, a tiny spot between the couch and a fan or end table, and this was after only two hour of running. I have a small hallway and it will go back and forth in that area for about 20 minutes. We sit there and cheer it on when it finally gets out, only to give a deep sigh when it gets itself stuck in that area again. Will not go over thresholds or slight floor transitions. 0, January 9, 2015

We just got our . It was simple to setup and charged in about two hours. We have run it once downstairs and upstairs.THE PLANThe plan is to run it during the day upstairs and to run it at night downstairs. The first problem we noted is that the schedule only seems to allow one time per day. This is ok since we have to carry it upstairs for the day runs. So, we just start it as we live in the morning. When we return, we put on the charger and let it clean at 2AM downstairs.OBSERVATIONSThe upstairs (approx. 1000 sqft) is a combination of wood floors, tile in the bathrooms, scatter rugs (bath style and oriental). Roomba did a good job covering an awkward area. We captured a full bin of hair from the dogs. The only problem is that it got caught in the... 5/5 Jack V. Roomba 650 vs Neato XV-11

I have had the roomba 650 for about a year now and just got the XV-11 so I thought it might be good to let people know my experience with the 2. First let me say that I am a BIG fan of both but I will compare/contrast the 2 and hopefully help you decide if you are on the fence.Cleaning: Both of them do a very nice job of cleaning and you will be surprised by how much dirt/dust/pet hair etc you get. While they are pretty even on this i give a slight edge to the XV-11 as it is a bit more powerful and will pick up "clinging" stuff better than the roomba. Both dust bins are comparable (in volume) with the Roomba being a bit bigger and easier to empty due to the XV-11 having to have the filter removed to empty. Not a big deal but Roomba a bit easier to empty. Winner = Tie.2.) Battery life. Roomba wins here hands down with battery life, with a catch... The roomba easily runs 45 mins - 1.5 hours on a charge. Both will need a bin emptying either half way... 5/5 coolhandluke2222 (Florida) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Roomba 650 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets (Misc.) Love it...wish I hadn't waited so long to get one.

I don't have to vacuum anymore and my floors have never been so clean. I scheduled it to run every day. It is amazing how much dust and other debris this thing picks up. All it takes is a 5 minute clean up of the Roomba each day-dump the bin, shake out the filter and clean the 2 rollers. It runs just over an hour before going back to base to charge. I have a large house, I run it in the main living area each day, and I move it manually to other parts of my house about 2x a month. Three-Stage Cleaning System: A spinning side brush cleans along wall edges as counter-rotating brushes pick up dirt, dust, debris and pet hair from the floor. An efficient vacuum pulls dirt and hair off of Roomba's brushes and into the bin.
Dirt Detect: Roomba uses an acoustic sensor to find dirtier areas and then spends more time cleaning them.
An improved brush design and optimized airflow means more hair is pulled off Roomba's brushes and into the AeroVac bin. Less hair on the brushes means Roomba can clean for longer and provide a more thorough cleaning.
    voids stairs and other drop-offs
AeroVac Technology: Optimized airflow pulls hair off Roomba's brushes and guides it to the back of the AeroVac bin, allowing it to fill more evenly and requiring you to empty it less often.
On-Board Scheduling: Preset up to seven times per week for Roomba to clean when it's most convenient for you.

    Convenient, Hassle-Free, Does the Job

I’ve seen the Deebot D83 model of this and upon first impression, this 35 looks a little less sleek, with the bristles poking out kind of like a spider, but it really does do the job. This one is designed to only work on hard floors, so it dodged the carpet when it bumped into it, but when it glided onto the carpet in the center of the room, it sensed it and immediately ran off.One of the walls in my house is straight then becomes diagonal, and the Deebot was able to navigate perfectly and got even the deeper corners that my vacuum couldn’t. For a robotic vacuum of its kind, this is relatively cheap, and well worth it. I can’t bring myself to clean the floors (ever) so as long as someone – or something – is doing it for me, I don’t care how long it takes. As long as I’m not vacuuming or sweeping, that little guy can run around as long as it needs to. Then as it’s dying it returns to the dock to charge itself. No hassle, not... 5/5 P. GREAT Vacuum!

Wow, what an awesome fast little vacuum!!! I didn't purchase this thinking it would keep my house 100% clean but it does!! I purchased this however for one reason. I have bad allergies and I wanted something I could run every few days to help pick up the dust, hair, and other things that just gather in your floor.. Keeping dust swept up, keeping hair vacuumed up (Human hair not pet hair) and everything else really helps GREATLY with allergies.. However, most of us have very busy lives and can't vacuum daily.. That is where this comes in!! I tried several different brands of these as I know they will be very very HOT holiday gifts this season... This one is one of my favorites and the price they are asking is AMAZINGPros:1.) VERY FAST.. It darts around my apartment very quickly!2.) Can vacuum the entire apartment on one charge!!3.) Dirt bin is plenty as long as you are using it daily or every few days!! If you haven't vacuumed in a month and expect this... 5/5 Devin Stephens (Knoxville TN) - See all my reviews, November 6, 2015

0 5/5 RETSmile (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ecovacs DEEBOT D35 Bare-Floor Cleaning Robot, Red (Misc.) Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) I was beyond thrilled to get this Deebot. I have a dog that sheds so badly it is impossible to keep my dark hardwoods clean. It would require sweeping at least twice a day and I don't have the time or energy to do that. This is soooooo easy. The only con so far is that the little debris tank fills up pretty quickly but I think that is because the vast amount of hair this dog and cat shed. I don't mind dumping it though since I don't have to vacuum or sweep myself. It's not totally perfect. It does miss some spaces but overall this is my dream product. I can't think of many things I'd rather have than this because it just saves times. You can schedule it to clean at a specific time schedule as well so you don't even have to turn it on and you don't have to be embarrassed by your floors when someone shows up unannounced.! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 28, 2015

Fantastic for reducing allergies, may make you a neat freak!

We bought this Roomba 880 robot vacuum cleaner to help clean our family vacation apartment. The apartment is only about 700 sq feet and is occupied for about 3-4 months of the year, so lots of dust accumulates between visits. I have a very severe dust mite allergy, and I usually sneeze for most of the time we are in the apartment, even if we damp dust and HEPA vacuum it with our Dyson canister vacuum cleaner soon after we arrive. I was very curious (and skeptical) to see whether Minnie (our Roomba) could alleviate these symptoms and reduce our cleaning workload while on vacation. The apartment has mixed surfaces. About two thirds of it is tiled and the rest is carpet, including the bedrooms. The floor plan is fairly open, except that the 2 bedrooms and bathrooms are separate along a corridor. This is important when considering how to use the robot most efficiently. Now that we have had Minnie for around a month, I have to say that she (has to be a she - the error messages... 5/5 Dawn Tarin (California) - See all my reviews, June 8, 2014

    I am in love!

I had a Roomba many years ago when they first came out. I was rather underwhelmed. It was loud, held very little dirt, got stuck often, and seemed to barely clean. I handed it 'down' to my mother who also rejected it. It sat unused on a lonely shelf until it made it's way to a yard sale. That Roomba was a novelty. This Roomba is a masterpiece. Or at least the sonnet that I'm going to compose to it will be. I have carpet in two bedrooms and the rest of the house is hardwood or linoleum. First the carpets - holy cow, I had no idea they were that dirty! The Roomba gets out dirt my full-size vacuum cleaner misses. I set it out to clean my bedroom and it filled up with dirt before it finished. The amount of dirt and dust was astonishing. I started it again, this time it filled up with dirt but it did finish. The third time it cleaned the entire bedroom, bathroom, and walk-in closet and was only half full. Not Great for Wood Floors

0 1/5 I Believe - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: iRobot Roomba 880 Vacuum Cleaning Robot For Pets and Allergies (Misc.) We bought it to help us keep up with our dark wood floors. They aren't terrible to maintain on my own since I only have two little girls and no pets, but I wanted it to do the vacuuming and then I could just wet mop and be done. My first impression... This thing is AWESOME! But after 2 weeks I was thinking "WHAT IS THAT"?! Sadly, I now have patterned scratches all over my wood floor. A couple of scratches wouldn't be a problem, heck, its a wood floor, but these are a 45 degree angle then a circle and another 45 degree and another circle, repeat, repeat, etc... RIGHT IN THE FRONT ENTRY WAY, and more in the kitchen. The thing is so loud, I couldn't hear the scratches being made. Has potential, but not quite ready for the market

I received this as a free review sample. It came tantalizingly close to being a decent product, but has some major flaws. Once those are addressed this would be not only a viable product, but a useful one. Here are the reasons why this is not ready (and what needs improvement):First, these is no documentation. It's not overly difficult to figure out, but there are references to things in this product description (at the time of my review) that do not exist or are not obvious when you receive the product.Second, this will NOT work on a carpet, as claimed. This is a duster made for hard floors. Ironically, it is actually effective in that role.Finding the on/off switch took a note from the company that provided my review sample. It's a little red switch on the bottom edge of the side. I had originally rated this lowed thinking that there was no switch. Instructions would have resolved that.Interestingly, this runs as well with... 3/5 Mike Tarrani (Deltona, FL USA) - See all my reviews, September 17, 2015

Customer Video Review Length:: 4:46 Mins Trendbox Black 9 inch Wireless Home Robotic Smart Auto Cleaner Robot with Microfiber Tissue Remove Dust Cleaning HelperNOTE: For rooms that need dusting, this is not a vacuum! OK that being said, this 9" robotic auto cleaner is the perfect size and I have only found one spot in my room that it gets stuck (see video). It runs for a long time and moves about the room as it should. They include a ton of cleaning clothes too. It looks nice and does the job of DUSTING wood floors and the price is amazing.I am not a professional photographer or a professional of the product I am reviewing. That being said, I hope my video/photos show this product in its correct form and quality! I do videos/photos to first show the product from a customer stand point and second to try and answer any questions customers may have, regardless of the answer! I do hope I did both for you!Fast shipment, packaged for... 4/5 Lyvona (Florida, US) - See all my reviews, October 26, 2015

0 4/5 rebecca mantuano - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Trendbox Black 9 inch Wireless Home Robotic Smart Auto Cleaner Robot with Microfiber Tissue Remove Dust Cleaning Helper (Kitchen) This is more of a light duty duster than a vacuum of sorts. This comes with a large supply of cleaning clothes and was fairly easy to figure out. I had some issues getting the microfiber to completely adhere to the machine and when the robot would bump into something and go to turn in a circle the microfiber would get caught in the wheels. For an open floor plan and light dusting i think this would work great for the price.Product received for testing and review purposes 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 29, 2015
