About this book
The interest in climbing and walking robots (CLAWAR) has remarkably augmented over recent years. Novel solutions for complex and very diverse application fields (exploration/intervention in severe environments, personal services, emergency rescue operations, transportation, entertainment, medical, etc.), has been anticipated by means of a large progress in this area of robotics. Moreover, the amalgamation of original ideas and related innovations, the search for new potential applications and the use of state of the art supporting technologies permit to foresee an important step forward and a significant socio-economic impact of advanced robot technology in the forthcoming years. In response to the technical challenges in the development of these sophisticated machines, a significant research and development effort has to be undertaken. It concerns embedded technologies (for power sources, actuators, sensors, information systems), new design methods, adapted control techniques for highly redundant systems, as well as operational and decisional autonomy and human/robot co-existence. This book contains the proceedings of the 7th Climbing and Walking Robots 2004 (CLAWAR 2004) Conference offering the international scientific community one of the most excellent forums for academics, researchers and industrialists interested in this motivating area of climbing and walking robots. It provides a wide forum of original state-of-the-art contributions from various industrial and new/emerging research fields, presenting a full picture of climbing and walking robots. The conference, held in Madrid, Spain, September 22-24 2004 was organized by the Thematic Network "CLAWAR 2" and funded by the European Commission under the GROWTH Programme.

The little Robot that cleans BIG

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:25 MinsEven with numerous friends that swear by their Roomba, I was still skeptical. How could this little machine really clean enough to impress me?When I received it I was really surprised at the size of it, much smaller than I had imagined. I was anxious to test it out, so using the quick start guide I had it unpacked and on the charger in less than 10 minutes. I do suggest that you consider the location you want to set up the home base, not because it'll take up much room, more just to have it out of the way if possible; mine is under an end table.I decided to start it on a Monday through Friday schedule at 3:15pm each day. It's a time when the house is usually empty and it would be less of a bother. The first time it ran of course I was home and I think I watched it the entire cleaning cycle. I was amused to say the least and it also let me see what problems might arise. I realized I needed to install a virtual wall to keep it from... 4/5 Cricket "Living life and loving it!" 3.9 Star NEATO XV-21 VERSUS 4.4 Star iRobot 770

I was SKEPTICAL about the initial $450 price tag for a vacuum bot, & have all tile floors. I bought the Neato XV-21, & the iRobot 770 (non-lighthouses) to keep the better one after testing. Iive alone, & keep a very clean home, so I didn't think they would pickup anything! Before testing, I wanted to make sure the floor was already clean. I moved all furniture and swept with a fine broom. I mopped all floors to hospital grade and waited 7 DAYS to test the iRobot on a clean floor as an ultimate test. I could see no dirt on the floors. The 770 finished with a 40% full container when done. I was amazed at the machine's effectiveness. It picked up small speckles of dirt, teeny-tiny rocks, hair, lint and other fine particles. The Neato was tested upstairs and I liked it more in the beginning. Then, it gave a 'LEFT WHEEL STUCK' error message after 3 weeks. The cheaply designed Wheel Motors got tangled and busted by it's internal parts. I looked it up and saw... 5/5 Frank Peters "Your Ace" (Houston TX) - See all my reviews, April 2, 2013

    Life changing product!

I am 41 years old and have had allergies my entire life - they have gotten worse over the past 5 years. I already take Singulair and Claritin but still have symptoms. I was just diagnosed with asthma, which apparently was caused by my allergies. Thus, I decided to wage war on indoor allergies in my house.I hired a cleaning company to clean my house a few years ago - they were horrible. I did a better job then they did. Also, I have pets and am not comfortable with someone being in my house with them when I am not there. My problem is time - I work full time and was finding little time to vacuum (to the point where I was vacuuming only once every week or other week). I have 3 cats and one dog, with hardwood floors and area rugs on my first floor and carpet in my bedroom and hallway upstairs. My house was not clean, to say the least. I just couldn't keep up with it.My brother suggested that I purchase this product. I thought, why not? This is the most amazing thing ever…

A couple of years ago I bought my sister the first generation of the Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner for about $250.00. Several weeks ago I ran across the O’Cedar O’Duster at Wal-Mart for about $40.00 and made an impulse purchase. I was so impressed that I got my mom the O’Duster for Christmas. My review will not only comment on my experience with the O’Cedar product but also compare the O’Duster to the Mint. Both of these products are hard floor sweepers (note I said “sweeper”. There is no sucking action on either of them.). They use a disposable cloth product to sweep wood, tile, vinyl, etc. They will not work on carpets/rugs; nor, are they designed to wet-clean the floor. These do not take the place of mopping.First, a description of the O’Cedar O’Duster…There is a round plastic center housing that is about eight inches in diameter and a little over two inches tall. It is surrounded... 5/5 M. Nance - See all my reviews, December 30, 2013

Great tool for those who are not expecting this to replace a human.

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:31 MinsI vacuum regularly but because I have pets, I need to Swiffer every couple of days or else a layer of fur builds up on my hardwood floors. I decided to give this a try and it works well for me. The long cycle lasted 2.5 hours when I tested it. It's not a Roomba, so don't expect a vacuum cleaner. It's not the Mint, so don't expect anything advanced or smart from it. It's simply a moving Swiffer-type cleaner that grabs small items like dust and pet/human hair. Don't expect it to pick up anything bigger and your expectations will be realistic. This does not replace a vacuum cleaner or actual sweeping by a thinking and seeing person, but it's good to leave on to do its stuff in between cleanings to get some pet hair off the floor without effort. It will get stuck in some areas like elevated edges, rugs, wires, and tight corners, so it probably won't be that effective left on when leaving the home. A great tool for those who are not expecting this to turn this... 4/5 BrooklynNY (NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: O-Duster Robotic Floor Cleaner (Health and Beauty), June 28, 2014

Helps to keep up with the dust on hardwood flooring

0 4/5 Russ - Largo, Fl - See all my reviews This review is from: O-Duster Robotic Floor Cleaner (Health and Beauty) Carpets can help to contain dust. My new hardwood floors do not. I am constantly coughing at night from dust in my bedroom because the hard flooring allows dust and hair to float around. This inexpense unit really helps.Be certain to give your room (floor) a thorough dusting and cleaning along with all of the furniture. Now, you are ready to use this unit. Let it do it's thing every other day and you will really notice a reduction in dust and hair.Easy to use. rechargeable. I would recommend you try it.Note: Ideally, floor should be clear of cords, books and junk. Have it start in the middle of the room if possible. Close your door or it will leave and work on the tile outside your bedroom!! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 27, 2013

With proper expectations set, this is the droid you've been looking for.

We've had this little guy for about three months and have been using it pretty much every other day. I couldn't be happier with it's performance. This little robot is a helper, and keeping that in mind, you'll find your floors stay much cleaner in between your more dedicated cleaning sessions. That's not to say you're completely out of the picture. You have a responsibility to use this robot, and while his AI is quite impressive at times, it is still an appliance. This is not entirely a "set it and forget it" robot. Think of it as other helpful appliances. Your dishwasher is great! But you still need to properly load it, pre-rinse when necessary, and occasionally still scrape some dry food off of a fork with your thumbnail. Your washer and dryer are fantastic! But you still need to make time for use in your evenings, transfer from one to the other, and darn it, they still don't fold your clothes. The Braava, is like an appliance in that way... 5/5 Dan (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Braava 380t Floor Mopping Robot (Misc.) Good for maintenance, but will not clean a dirty floor

I so desperately wanted this to work. As the mom of two kids under five, my floors remain perpetually sticky thanks to spilled juice, dribbled dinner, and a host of other toddler-induced messes. I was thrilled thinking that this floor mopping robot would help make my work load easier. It made me sad to learn that it did little more than just wipe my floors down. I tried it a few different ways: once with the dry sweeping cloth, once with water and the wet mopping cloth, and once with a swiffer wet cloth. It is super easy to use and after the first time I used it, it seemed to learn my kitchen fairly quickly. The bottom of the cloth showed that it had picked up some dirt, but there were still several spots of the floor that I later had to go back and clean by hand. If your floors are already in fairly good condition and you just want a quick touch-up between deep cleanings, I think the Braava can handle that, but if your floors are genuinely in need of mopping, this isn't going to make... 3/5 Sarah B. - See all my reviews, October 8, 2013

Good for floors that you cant use Scooba on

Customer Video Review Length:: 7:08 MinsI have been a fan of the IRobot series of robot for several years now since originally purchasing a 300 series Scheduler (named Fred) and then later on the Scooba (named Wilma). And although not perfect, I have a few gripes about each, I still like these little cleaning wonders. The Braava 380 floor mopping robot is one of the latest offerings for iRobot with the Braava 380t being the higher end model of their floor mopping series and an alternative to the wet mopping Scooba. Since moving a couple years back and going from a house that had the type of flooring that a Scooba was ok to use with (i.e. ceramic tile and linoleum) to a different home with wood laminate that is not recommended for use on, I decided to look for an alternative to my Scooba. I originally spotted the Mint and decided to wait to see how the device faired and then after seeing IRobot buying Mint and making a version of their own, I went ahead and got the Braava (you... 4/5 JWink - See all my reviews, November 3, 2013

    Fights Fur Furiously

We just got our . It was simple to setup and charged in about two hours. We have run it once downstairs and upstairs.THE PLANThe plan is to run it during the day upstairs and to run it at night downstairs. The first problem we noted is that the schedule only seems to allow one time per day. This is ok since we have to carry it upstairs for the day runs. So, we just start it as we live in the morning. When we return, we put on the charger and let it clean at 2AM downstairs.OBSERVATIONSThe upstairs (approx. 1000 sqft) is a combination of wood floors, tile in the bathrooms, scatter rugs (bath style and oriental). Roomba did a good job covering an awkward area. We captured a full bin of hair from the dogs. The only problem is that it got caught in the... 5/5 Jack V. Roomba 650 vs Neato XV-11

I have had the roomba 650 for about a year now and just got the XV-11 so I thought it might be good to let people know my experience with the 2. First let me say that I am a BIG fan of both but I will compare/contrast the 2 and hopefully help you decide if you are on the fence.Cleaning: Both of them do a very nice job of cleaning and you will be surprised by how much dirt/dust/pet hair etc you get. While they are pretty even on this i give a slight edge to the XV-11 as it is a bit more powerful and will pick up "clinging" stuff better than the roomba. Both dust bins are comparable (in volume) with the Roomba being a bit bigger and easier to empty due to the XV-11 having to have the filter removed to empty. Not a big deal but Roomba a bit easier to empty. Winner = Tie.2.) Battery life. Roomba wins here hands down with battery life, with a catch... The roomba easily runs 45 mins - 1.5 hours on a charge. Both will need a bin emptying either half way... 5/5 coolhandluke2222 "coolhandluke2222" (Florida) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Roomba 650 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets (Misc.) Love it...wish I hadn't waited so long to get one.

I don't have to vacuum anymore and my floors have never been so clean. I scheduled it to run every day. It is amazing how much dust and other debris this thing picks up. All it takes is a 5 minute clean up of the Roomba each day-dump the bin, shake out the filter and clean the 2 rollers. It runs just over an hour before going back to base to charge. Misleading Advertising on a Good Robot

0 3/5 Amazon Customer - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Braava 320 Floor Mopping Robot (Misc.) Firstly, let me say that this robot is excellent. It delivers on every performance aspect, and is an excellent compliment to my Neato Robot Vacuum for cleaning my house (which is all tile and hardwood).HOWEVER, buyers beware that this robot does not function as advertised out of the box. The "mop" function that iRobot touts so loudly on this device is a misnomer. Out of the box the robot can only carry out the mopping motion, but iRobot does not include the necessary Reservoir Pad to actually carry water. They sell these for $40 + shipping on the iRobot website, and they are available for over double that price on Amazon through a private seller. If you are purchasing this to mop and not just sweep, you will have to plan on spending an extra $40 minimum and 3-4 weeks waiting for the necessary reservoir system to arrive to run an actual wet mop cleaning. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 14, 2014

    Was Skeptical...

I'm really impressed so far with how this thing performs. I bought the three pack of microfiber cloths with it, so that I could clean the whole house without doing a load of laundry and re-use the pads.I have newly installed fake hardwood floors, the type you can spill a gallon of wine on and nobody would be the wiser, even if you left it over night. The downside, especially because they are gray and my house gets a lot of light, is that you can see EVERYTHING. Every spec of dirt, every black dog hair (there are a lot) is screaming at me every morning even if I just vacuumed. Here is my strategy for the 320 -1. Do a really crappy job vacuuming. Like for 2 minutes tops, once a week or something. This gets the big stuff.2. Set it to dry swiff, go to work3. Come home, put the wet cloth in a bowl with a couple drops of floor cleaner and hot water. Wring out the cloth, put it on, start it off4. Take a cup of warm water and flick little drops... 5/5 K. It really freshens and... Read more Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 4, 2014

    Better than a live-in maid

I've been clinging to the same beat up Dirt Devil Vibe Upright (with Power Brush attachment!) since I bought it on clearance ten years ago. The suction is terrible, it's as loud as a cement mixer, and it weighs about as much as that cement mixer. Needless to say, I have been in need of a new vacuum for quite some time, but never did I think that vacuum would be a Roomba.Truth be told: I always thought robot vacuums/sweepers were a bit of a gimmick, something for tech-junkies or, well, the lazy. So when it arrived in the mail, I opened it with both skepticism and cynicism, thinking, if nothing else, the Roomba would serve as a fun new torture device for our cat, Sherlock. As much as it pains me to admit, I am now eating crow. The Roomba 870, despite a few limitations, is an incredible appliance and I will (probably) not speak ill-ly of them again. My home set up: one-bedroom apartment, about 700 sq ft, tile in the bathroom and kitchen, carpet and throw rug in... 4/5 D. For the Love of Roomba

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:25 Mins___________________________________________________________NOTE ON VIDEO:I thought it was fun to have iRobot's 780 (black hat) and LG's Hom-Bot (white hat) confined and cleaning inside a small space. Watch and draw you own conclusions.___________________________________________________________To establish some background, we've been using robotic vacuum cleaners since 2007. The 870 would be the third Roomba and the fourth robot vacuum cleaner we've used. Prior to the 870's arrival we were using the but the older Roombas, and... 5/5 Cthulhu "Cthulhu" (Minas Anor, GD) - See all my reviews, August 24, 2014

    Amazing robotic vacuum cleaner

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:16 MinsVacuum cleaning is such a chore to me that I would make excuses to defer it until there is enough dirt on the floor to become an eyesore or a potential health risk (or just before in-law's visit). When I was given the opportunity to try the iRobot Roomba 870, I couldn't pass it up.The Roomba 870 is surprisingly easy to setup. Simply plug in the home base, remove a couple of plastic and cardboard tabs from the bottom of the roomba and then dock it to the home base. As soon as it's fully charged for the first time, it's ready to do the chore. To start a cleaning session, just press the 'Clean' button in the center to power up, and press it again to start cleaning. You can also schedule cleaning sessions by programming the day of the week and time to start.Perhaps it's my first time to use a vacuuming robot, I was surprised that the Roomba selected its cleaning path in a seemingly unorganized fashion. It would run all over the room,... 5/5 eau (USA) - See all my reviews, September 8, 2014

    Roomba for Life!

This review is just to address the refurbished aspect of the unit. As my husband pointed out, getting refurbished is sometimes more reliable than a brand new unit because the problems have been identified and corrected. Our roomba arrived mostly charged, but we decided to charge it fully according to the instructions to avoid any compromises to the battery. It has run perfectly for a week now, cleaning about three rooms every other day. We clean the unit after every run, which involves removing the dust bin to empty, removing the hair from the brushes and joints with the provided comb and a paperclip, checking the wheels for additional hair build up, and wiping down the sensors (about a five minute job, tops). However, we have four large dogs, one long-haired cat, two women, and down comforters and pillows in our house that all shed like crazy! This vacuum gets up everything without stirring it up into the air, and gets in the hard-to-reach places, too.The unit came with a... 5/5 Deanna "Say something about yourself!" This review is from: iRobot Roomba 560 Automatic Robotic Vacuum (Certified Refurbished) (Home) It can be loud when sleeping. Will scratch hardwood or bamboo floors if it get's stuck in an odd place. ie: under the dishwasher. Place electrical tape around the wheel to reduce scratches. Also place small felt pads on bumper to reduce shock from hitting walls. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 11, 2015
